Dumbbells and Drama

“I have been working out for 2 weeks, but I don’t seem to be sweating or even feeling the muscles. Am I doing something wrong?” Does this sound familiar? I bet it does. I spent half a year feeling this way, I won’t believe you if you say you have never considered stopping your gym routine because you didn’t see results in 2 weeks.

I’d need you to pay some attention to what I have to say. More than physical tips and tricks to see results, this post will train your mind. Because when you start this fitness journey, you need to train your mind before you train your body. Listen up.

The internet is full of videos of people working out. But all those gym dudes are ripped, all those women can lift 100kgs like it’s the easiest thing in the world. All these videos basically show us people training in “beast mode” No one gives us the reality. No one tells us how that “beast” started off being a lanky bro at the gym, staring at the machine and trying to figure out how he’d work his way through his routine on his first day. No one talks about that girl with a ripped core who could barely do a 20 second plank a year ago. No one talks about all that pain and soreness you end up with on the day after the gym. No one talks about how they don’t see tone and definition in 2 weeks.

Why would they? No one wants to see people in over-sized shirts trying their best to do a walking lunge, no? This is where we start from. This is where I need you to pay attention. This is where I request you to get together and SHARE. Not comfortable sharing workout videos? Fine. Share your workouts instead. Share stats. SHARE! Form a community and SHARE! Point is, you’ll motivate each other. You’ll meet people who’re at different points in their fitness journey, you’ll charge along as a group. And don’t ever be intimidated. You should check out #TwitterGetsFitter on Twitter and consider joining them. Here-s their website-www.twittergetsfitter.com

Also, stop stressing about your sweat. Just keep moving. Remember one thing: If you’re trying to lose weight, it’s more often about increasing the intensity and not doing everything you can to sweat more.

There’s nothing wrong in showing the results, but it’s important that you realise all these “beasts” started off at some point with absolutely NOTHING on them. Once upon a time I could not do a single crunch. I used the ab-machine for 6 months before my body got used to the movement, and I slowly started doing crunches with my hands extended. The rest as we all know, is history.

I would understand why you’d not want to share a picture of you struggling at the gym. But I highly recommend that you share your workouts and your progress with friends and gym partners around you. You’ll realise it’s okay to not sweat, it’s okay to not feel the definition or see the tone. YOU’LL LEARN PATIENCE. And that, my friends, is the only thing that matters.

If you could get your dream body in two days, what goal would you be excited about next? Nothing. Focus on the journey, not the destination. It’s a wonderful trip, and you’ll make great friends along the way and learn some extremely healthy life lessons too!
